Silver Tongued Stools
‘It is interesting how, at times, the spontaneous gesture of creating an object might appear obvious, but it can sometimes accidentally have so many associations that its original intended function becomes irrelevant.’
‘The object I am referring to is a stool I spotted during my regular afternoon hikes in Kastellorizo, Greece. It was placed on the side of the road, by a boat propped up on tree trunks to elevate it while being repaired. The stool was made from a section of a date tree that had probably died, like most others on the island. It was cut at the height of a seat and turned upside down, so that its branches pointed downwards. They were closely trimmed to the bark and meticulously rounded to avoid the usual crude linear cuts. It looked as though lava had overflowed from the centre and solidified as it was running down the sides. The stool was wider at its base, meaning that the bark would have become wider as it grew upwards, which is quite unusual. It resembled early Lynda Benglis pieces – her house was only down the road from where the stool was found.’
